8.1 Tuning
Hey, I just picked up an 01 2500hd with an 8.1 to use for work, got it really cheap ($5500), and it runs great. I was looking at the stock tune and I noticed some funny stuff with the fueling. The o2 switch points in the rich/lean are high at 521-568. Stock 6.0 5.3 etc..trucks run 451 which is supposed to be 14.68:1. The consensus seems to be that the lower the number, it will lean it out a little bit, the higher number will richen it up at part throttle; people use this as a way to trick the pcm into running richer or leaner if they want. Also, i noticed that it is commanding something around 11.03:1 in PE. Now my thoughts are i would like to move the switch points back to 451 like the rest, lean out the PE to something more normal. My concern is does GM have a good reason for running these motors so rich? When i change the switch points to 451, is it going to throw my VE tables off? If anyone has tuned one of these thing, i would appreciate the help and maybe somethings to look at to get the most out of it. Thanks!
P.S. I didn't post the tune, but if you look in the repository on HPT, they are all similar to mine, the newer ones look a little better, but still not how i would think they should be.
