My highway mileage SUCKS compared to yours. Took it on a ~300 mile round trip this weekend and netted 15.5 mpg

why would you not take advantage of your 4th gear around town? thats alot of extra rpms driving around.

Gas mileage isn't rpm specific. That is a good part of it, but engine load is more important. Don't believe me? Go put your truck in 4th gear with the converter locked and push the pedal down as far as you can without downshifting and see what kind of gas mileage you get. Then put it in 3rd with it locked and compare the gas mileage.

I've logged gas mileage with both EFI Live and my Aeroforce scan gauge. The truck has to use much more fuel with a higher load on it.

On a cable driven throttle body(I can't speak for an electronic one), the amount of air that enters the engine relies on your right foot. Even though the truck hasn't downshifted there is more air entering the engine. The PCM has one of two choices: To maintain the same fuel level and go lean, or to increase fuel to compensate for the added amount of air.

It's the same reason why people see an increase with lower gearing. There is less stress on the engine and less effort to get it moving.

Now obviously we aren't all rolling around with 5.13 gears so there is a point where rpm plays a larger factor than engine load.

My truck drives around at 40 mph in 4th gear, converter locked just fine. I don't have to give it much gas because I'm usually holding speed and barely even have to crack open the throttle body to hold a constant speed. I actually hate 3rd gear lock up. I have it set not to lock up at all until 4th gear.

mine locks in fourth and i barely have to give it any gas to hold 45mph, in fact i let off the gas a lot so i don't speed. and my tune is setup to run lean while cruising. i get 18mpg every tank with 50/50 mixed...

Might be a dumb question but, how do you know or what do you feel when your verter locks up or unlocks??

it feels like another gear, your rpms will drop ~300. Tapping the brake will cause it to unlock. Test it.
