'97 OBS LS swap 0411 PCM questions.
Whats going on guys my first post, I have a '97 Silverado 5.7, slipping 4l60e,2wd,411 PCM Swap truck is pretty much stock.
I have my mind set on a LS motor and 4l60e tranny 5.3 most likely and wondered since I already have the 0411 PCM running the Vortec 5.7 will a 5.3 swap pretty much be plug and play? Will the trans harness from a '97 hook to a newer 60e?
I have HPTuners, would all it need is a flash from a truck the engine was pulled out of?
Also what year range of engine should I look for?
Thanks for your help.

Welcome!
Just because you have teh 0411 PCM in a GMT 400 truck already, doesnt mean that going to a GMT 800 truck engine will be plug and play, there will 100% be some repinning involved, but as you know it ownt be bad.
If you want a cable actuated throttle an LS1 Camaro or similar calibration is needed, if youw ant to use ETC(elctronic throttle control) an LS1 Vette calibration or similar is needed as a base to start tuning from unless you plan on a bone stock GEN 3/4 engine.
Shoenfield makes a set of longtube headers for GEN 3 engine use in the GMT 400 trucks.
The wiring will be the wiring will be the same between your 1 piece 4l60e and the newer 2 pice case 4l60e/65e. There might be a plug different, but nothing you cant overcome.
Engine choice, LM7, LR8, Lq9, LQ4, LS1, LS2., some of the GEn 4 engines like the L92, LS3, L99, LS7, LS9, LSA really work well.
I'm going to suggest an LQ4 or LQ9 with the L92 heads, that will allow 525hp without too much trouble.
Here are al teh GEN 3 4 engines for you to ponder.

You can also ****** a brand new 2014 460hp Stingray GEN 5 LT1 engine for $10,700.

hey im also very new. and im planning on something similar in my truck. i have a 98 C1500. i have done some bolt on mods and have pretty much reached the maximum capability of the 350 vortec before getting into costly and complex mods such as intake swaps. i wanna do a 5.3 swap for the sake of a vastly superior engine with limitless aftermarket. what would be the biggest things to keep in mind with the swap?

I am just finishing a LS1 swap into a 96 Silverado, 2wd, 4L60E, RCLB.
The nickel and dime stuff - if you replace all the old sensors etc will get expensive. You should upgrade the trans also - more $. There will be surprises.
I used a 2001 Vortec and bored it to 5.7, added a small Camp cam ( TPX - 254HR) and it engine dyno'd at over 440 ft # and 420HP. Using LS Camaro electric fans I hope to squeeze 20+ MPG out of it.
You can not do any of that with a SBC!

It is relatively easy to mod the 5.7 vortec harness for a Gen3 engine, basically add coil and injector wiring and connectors and move a few things around. Not sure if I can mention who and where on this board, but the info is easy to fnd.

most of what i have read is people mating the 2 together. sorting what wires are needed off the stock gen 3 harness and and cleaning up what isnt need and then just intigrating with the stock 5.7 ecm to maintain speedometer functionallity and all the other things. i guess i would be asking which would you guys prefer and why? i can get a whole engine with accessories and harness for cheap. but would a standalone aftermarket harness be easy to integrate?

If it is for the 98 truck in your sig---There is NO reason to run 2 PCMs or to buy a standalone harness. You can repin and slightly rework your stock 98 harness for the Gen3 PCM and add 10 wires to run the Gen3 engine.
