cam idle
I recently installed a cam in my truck and i know it sounds crazy but i liked the way it idled before i had it tuned when he tuned it for me he set the idle at 775 rpm i took it back and told him to set it at 650 cause it barley had any chop now i have no problem the way it idles when in park it sounds like it used to but when i put it in drive the chop almost goes away the rpm doesnt realy change it stays around 650 i was thinking of giong back and having him lower it more to 600 or will he have to mess with the timing or A/F ratio to get it to idle ruff in drive?

you have a comp 220/224 according to a previous post. it should have lope at 650. try dropping it to 600, you should keep as low as possible w/o stalling issues. i've went through the same thing, got mine set at 700 and think it will idle fine at 600. i'll probably have it dropped on my next tune. who does your tuning?

Sorry been awhile since i been on here enjoying the truck. I took it back to the tuner and had him drop it to 600 it idles ok i would still like to drop it more when i go back for the dyno tune. Speed Inc does the tuning I asked him to drop it to 650 the first time and he was tellin me that it would prolly die then i brought it back ordered some stuff and had him drop it to 600 then he realy thought i was crazy maybe they dont deal with alot of 5.3s???? hasnt come close to dieing yet so i think it can idle down somore. The cam is a comp XR273HR Ill see if i can figure out how to post some idle clips im new to the site. Anyone have an idle less than 600?

I've got a 216/224 duration, .551 lift Crane Cam. I'm idling at 690. If I go much lower, I start tripping misfire codes. I could adjust the misfire detection sensitivity via HPTuners, but I'm happy with the sound of the idle as it is.
My HPTuner logs show my electronic throttle dithering with the chop in the rpm, indicating at 690, it is not a stable situation. You don't know listening to it that the throttle is activily working to keep the engine running, while not letting it die, but the logs clearly show that the computer isn't finding a single throttle setting that "holds" at 690.
