Default Crazy knock sound....please help....

Havn't had any problems with this truck at all....03 silv 5.3

Went to go home from work, turned the truck over and noticed a bad knock...so freaking out immedieatly shut it off, i check the oil pressure, it has good oil pressure, has oil, always keep oil with me so i added some just to be on the safe side, started it up again, same thing! Shut it off....

Doesn't sound like slap, or a stuck lifter...Could i be overlooking something else? Only other thing i can think of is a bad harmonic balancer? I've heard that when it goes out it sounds like a rod knocking? It's pitch black and 40 degrees out so ill look again in the morning....

Any ideas?

How did you check oil pressure if you immediately turned it off?

Broken flexplate maybe....when is the last time you drove it? Usually parts dont break while the truck is off.

how many miles?

If the engine is in stock form and you havent been inside it modifying it or replacing parts then all i can tell you is get used to.. 1999-2007 or 2008 chevrolet engines have been known to knock (cold piston slap, lifter tick, flex plate knock) almost every gm truck ive been around has had the knock to a certain degree if it was in stock form.. Mine has knocked since i got it with 120k on it.. now it has 197k on it, still knocks but runs good and i havent had any serious problems with it.

187,000 miles -- pretty hard knock thought not like the sound of a stuck lifter or anything.

The piston slap everyone is talking about is always worse when its cold outside. It also takes a second for it to appear on the initial start up. Was this sound instant or did it take a few seconds for it to start? If you drove it yesterday with no problems then I have a feeling there is no major problem. Was it running really rough while making this noise? I dont want to give you any bad advice, but the only way to get past piston slap is to let the engine warm up. If there is a problem then you probably wont really want to let it run that long...

If it is in fact piston slap (which can sound pretty scary) then there is no need to worry. It sucks... and I hate it as well, but these motors do it. Luckily mine doesnt really do it, but I only have 44k... its basically inevitable.

How long have you had the truck? U seriously never heard piston slap before?

My 03 Burb in the winter sounds like a cold powerstroke diesel when its started in the morning.

I've heard of piston slap, but this is a lot louder. Truck has 180K miles.

Does this noise go away when the engine is warmed up? Since you drove it work without any other problems im going to assume yes.

180K? its still a baby
