EBCM Replacement with code C0550
Hi all. I have an '06 Tahoe 4WD w/a 5.3 and ABS/Traction Control. I have been having an ABS issue with the truck for well over a year. When I slowly accelerate from a dead stop I could hear the ABS/traction control pump going for 2 or 3 seconds. This wasn't such a problem with driving the truck, but I knew it wasn't right.
However, last week when driving on snow the dash lit up with lights and the ABS/traction control stopped working. Now I have the ABS, Brake, and TC lights on with two messages cycling on the digital display about "service stability" and something else.
The local Chevy dealership pulled code C0550 and said that the EBCM needs to be replaced at $715 for the part plus 1.5 hours labor. Since I don't have $904 to drop at the moment, I'm looking for alternatives. I've found part # 10391251 online for half that price. The Chevy service dept says that a new module will require 'programming' and it's not something that an average joe can do.
Do you agree with the diagnosis? Do you agree with their statement that a new EBCM requires programming after it's installed?
Thanks.

If you have RPO JL4, it needs to be programmed with SPS. It sounds like you two seperate problems here. The biggest is the internal fault in the EBCM. The other you mentioned is more than likely rust build up between the front wheel speed sensor and its mounting surface. It causes the air gap to increase between the sensor and tone ring and that causes the voltage produced to occur later and the EBCM picks this up as a wheel that isn't turning.
