Got my Nelson tune..Do I need a crank relearn??
Ok so I got my nelson tune in...So Do I need the crank relearn? I have heard people talk about it but don't really understand it.. Is this something you have to get done @ the dealer? (how much does it cost) and what exactly does it do? Thanks for any info! And happy new years, Bigwake03.

More than likely you need one done, unless you sent him your original PCM that is.
I have driven around with the SES light from the crank re-learn not being done for a couple of months total after various Nelson tuned PCMs. It won't hurt anything from my experience.
The SES light kind of bugs you but after a couple of weeks you get used to it and don't give a crap anymore. Just don't go out and have it done if your planning on multiple tunes in the coming months. Its a complete waste of money IMO.
Get it done when your happy with the tune and don't plan any mods that warrant a new tune.
I had a local garage guy quote me $50.00 to do it. Seemed like kind of a rip for a 5 minute procedure. I got to know some really cool people in the service department at my local Chevy dealer that do it for free after hours.
They are the best!!

From my understanding, it is what tells the pcm where in the cycle the crank is. Is it necessary? I would think so. Yes it will run ok without doing it, but I think the pcm should know something like that. Some tunes will come out close enough that it won't throw the code, and trip the light, but in my truck, I would want the pcm to know exactly were the crank is.

ive put in 4 different nelson computers in (2 ssr's 1 5.3 cc and 1 2500hd ) and the only one that poped that code was the 5.3 nelson said to just drive it at like 55-60mph for a while and it should learn it ran good other than that

I switched from a 99 to 02 PCM and never got the light on many swaps. Most of the ones getting the lights are 03+, some, but not many of Nelson tunes from earlier trucks are getting these lights. Hardly any at all are getting a security relearn either.
