Default How did you learn tuning

Just curious how most of you learned to tune vehicles with HPTuners or whatever software you may use. Did you just sit down and learn by trying, have a friend teach you, take a class, read a manual or book, etc?

Read a lot on the hptuners forum and tried it myself with my own truck. I read a few books after the fact but it didnt really teach me anything I didnt already know.

I use EFILive. I just dove right in, and read a lot on their forum. One thing I did wrong, was I made too many changes to my vehicle for a first tune. I would strongly suggest that someone starting out only make small changes to the engine so that the tube does not require too much to correct it.

Read Read Read. I have put so many hours in reading the hptuners forum. There is a lot of good info in there. I try to follow the big name tuners and read the info they give first. Also there are some great write ups for Idle tuning, VE tuning, MAF tuning, ect. The stickies are your friend.

I was always taught there were two ways to learn: experience and knowledge. Experience is learning from your own mistakes and Knowledge is learning from others mistakes. So I try to start with knowledge and then gain experience.... A good way to start is get a copy of Calibrated Express and follow the DVD. It teaches you first how to log and read the data. Then you learn to use that data to make tuning changes. As they said above go slow and make your changes one at a time until you have gained experience. Also, it helps if you get a good wideband O2 and log it using the USB/serial data format. Once you have a basic understanding, help from forum members can greatly accelerate your learning curve.

Should have "still learning" as an option for your poll. It never ends

I was just about to say this. I've been reading up on it for a good while now, and I'll always stumble up on something that I'll have to read twice or so, just because I've never realized it before.

Self taught for the most part, when I got stuck I was lucky to have guys like HumpinSS or black02SS point me in the right direction...8 years ago there weren't any manuals out there to go by, it was sink or swim or get it tuned by someone who may or may not have more knowledge than you

I've had the privilege of reading the tuning schools manual(great for the newb), read Dan Maslic's tuning book(another very good one), read calibrated success(alot of the info is over the head of the new user but great content none the less), Read Don Lasota's ford tuning guide for hptuners(another great read for ford guys as their systems are very different from GM)...overall I would say that most of these books/guides are well worth the money and will definitely get you a leg up out of the gate.
