The terminology has changed through the years and from manufacturer to manufacturer, but it all means the same thing, a few examples:

PCM = Powertrain Control Module
ECM = Engine Control Module
ECU = Engine Control Unit

etc, etc....

A PCM controls both the trans and the engine
An ECM controls only the engine.
A TCM controls the transmissions.

The new 6l80e trans uses and internal TCM and a seperate ECM. The 96-06 trucks use a PCM. The 87-95 TBI trucks used an ECM.

You can desensitize the knock sensors. A lot cheaper and easier this way. As long as you know what is safe and what isn't, desentizing your sensors isn't going to lead to anything tragic. Obviously combinations like 14.0:1 AFR & 40* of timing is unsafe... If your not stupid, you'll be fine.

Well you can change the OS, but the 01-02 pcm actually is better hardware, its not just the OS, or the tuners would have no problem flashing the newer OS onto the 99-00 pcms. There is a faster processor in the 01-02 and it helps alot on the false knock. The main benefit I could think of just switching OS would be the extra timing and only one VE table.

Yes thats correct, Just verify the Vin code. They use that pcm in every vehicle. Just make sure if your looking for a 5.3 its a vin T and not a W or somthing else.
