You have to flash the code or jump the code and read the pulses in the SES light. To jump the code, you have to ground the ALDL connector, turn the ignition on and basically count the flashes. Long flashes are tens and quick flashes are ones...so for example, two long flashes and three quick flashes would be 23.

Before it died & will not restart, was the check engine light on? Was it running well, or running poorly?

IIRC, first, and last, it will blink code "12" which lets you know that it's in diagnostic mode, and any stored codes will be in between. If there are no codes, it will only flash the "12" (blink...blink-blink). The terminals that need to be jumped are "A and B" BTW, I still have my old "key" that plugged right in to the ALDL. A jumper wire or paper clip works just as well though

I still have my old key as well, but haven't touched it in years.

LOL, yea me too, I think that the last time I used mine was in the mid-90's when my 85 MonteSS stalled on the highway. Turned out to be a bad ECM and it didn't have any codes stored anyway
