Default HP Tuners, tuning boost with MAF help

I just got done installing a turbo on my buddies 03 6.0 2500. He still has the factory 1 bar map and I'm debating whether or not I should try and tune it from the MAF sensor or not. I plan on running about 8lbs of boost, will this peak the factory MAF sensor? Any assistance from members that have boosted their trucks without upgrading to the 2 bar map would be greatly appreciated.

with my old turbo setup @ 10 psi i ran the MAF. So yes you can run it.

Your gonna max it out pretty quick though.

You can always go straight to 2bar, 8lbs might be getting really close to the max. give it a try and let us know what you decide to do.

8#'s is the magic spot. The real problem is popping a maf code. This will cause you to run in Speed Density, which in turn means you are working off of a 1bar VE table. Even worse, an untuned VE tuned (if that's the case).

So make sure VE table 105kpa is fat and protecting the setup. The whole VE should be tuned properly anyway as well. Then increase the MAF upper limit settings so it wants to stay on the MAF even though it goes outside the MAF's upper threshold. It works fine if one is okay with tuning that way and can accept anything passed the MAF's limit is pretty much an educated guess and usually a cause for a rich scenario as you enter that last cell but a good AFR as you reach the end of that cell (if that makes sense, makes sense in my head LOL).

FI and MAFs are just a bad idea. Run 2 bar SD.

Why not install a 2bar MAP sensor and give the PCM the correct info it needs?

You can run the MAF with a good amount of boost. If you happen to "max out" the maf table, you can simply perform a scaling procedure and be back into MAF "limits" again and control the fueling. I did this with my old Radix 6.0L combo and it worked great. In a nutshell, you multiply every table that has g/cyl as an axis by whatever scaling percent you desire... 0.9 for a 10% scale, 0.7 for a 30% scale etc. Don't forget to multiply the IFR table as well. As for the timing tables...well you will lose some resolution as the reference line will need to be scaled the corresponding % however you will again gain full control of timing throughout the boost levels. Here is a post that discusses some of this, you can search around for more to get an idea of what to do:

However, I still say the 2 bar MAP is a well accepted solution. I just posted this to show there are other ways to not max your MAF in boost situations and still have control of fueling and timing.

Stock48 was running 20# boost on a 370ci and using the MAF... Lucky joker..
I never had good luck with the MAF and went to 2bar SD. It was much easier for me to tune, using EFI Live.
