Default Just got back from the dyno at DRM - Wait4me tune results inside - weird findings

Ok, well on Friday after work I ran over to Doug Rippie Motorsports and picked up my 01 Z06 cam and springs and while BSing for a minute I told Doug I had ordered a mail order tune for my silverado and that it helped quite a bit and gave me quite a bit more power over my factory tune. Doug said "Oh yeah?" then said "Why don't you pull it on in and let's strap it down on the dyno?" So I pulled it in and we got it all strapped down. He just wanted to do a couple of pulls. Here's what all went down......

The dyno run was from 2600RPM to 5800 RPM
Barometric Pressure was 29.10 in. hg.
Air Temperature was 83 deg F

Here's how the power laid out......

RPM HP TQ A/F
2800 131 247 18.0
2900 133 242 16.4
3000 137 241 14.3
3100 142 240 13.2
3200 146 240 12.2
3300 151 240 11.9
3400 154 239 11.7
3500 157 236 11.6
3600 163 238 11.6
3700 168 238 11.7
3800 170 235 11.7
3900 175 236 11.7
4000 179 235 11.7
4100 184 236 11.7
4200 186 232 11.8
4300 190 232 11.7
4400 193 230 11.8
4500 196 229 11.8
4600 198 226 11.8
4700 203 227 11.8
4800 205 224 11.8
4900 208 223 11.8
5000 210 221 11.9
5100 210 221 11.9
5200 210 216 11.9
5300 209 208 11.9
5400 207 201 11.9
5500 201 192 11.9
5600 191 179 11.9

Peak HP 210 Peak TQ 246

Now I don't know how those numbers look to the rest of you guys but I think they're pretty lame. Doug said "Those A/F numbers are pig rich". I think that would explain my lazy low end power I've been having with the tune and the fact that I haven't seen my gas mileage go up since installing the tune. Also, what does a stock 4.8 dyno at? For some reason 230 HP seems to ring a bell? Am I losing power because this thing is running so rich? Also, when I install my '01 Z06 cam that I picked up from Doug, do you think this will correct the A/F problem since the cam is bigger? I am thinking maybe to do it the right way I should send my wait4me tune back and just have Doug dyno tune it after I install the cam this week. Just thought you'd all like to see these numbers and throw your opinions out.

Thanks,

Joe

There is no tune like a dyno/street tune...That truck is way PIG *** rich! The HP numbers look low for a 4.8 too.

Will putting the bigger cam in bring the A/F ratio better into range do you think? I have no idea what it should be idealy? I know I was taught years ago that the perfect fuel air ratio was 14.7:1, but on a performance app would 12.9:1 be more like it? I'm just wondering what the best plan of attack is here.

good plan of attack would be to install your cam and have it dyno tuned....I dont think that the cam will help those numbers fall into place at all.

the cam doesnt have alot to do with afr, if I were you I would just buy hp tuners if you want it done right do it yourself most dyno tunes are only for wot and at around 400-500 I think they are a rip off you can buy the software for the same amount and make alot more power, part throttle is where its at.

just my .02

oh those low numbers are because its so rich lean it out to 13:1 and I bet youll pickup 15 to 25 rwhp

That's exactly what I was thinking. Although the tune still feels stronger than the stock tune.......

it's hard to not feel better than the stock tune though. doing nothing more than pulling some torque management and moving the shift points on a 4.8L and it feels as though you've put a bigger engine in there.

P.M. me and I might be willing to tweak your tune for you. Talk with Jesse and see what he wants to do for you first though.

I'm in Maple Grove.. I threw a LS6 cam in a 5.3 Yukon and didn't like it. Much better choices out there for cam shafts, heck even high ratio rockers would have been better IMHO

Who did the cam install ect.. Did DRM sell you used parts from a H/C Z06? They should have told you that the cam wasn't a good fit for your setup.

I would talk to Jesse, and maybe fax that sheet to him. Just like any mail order tuner, he sets his tunes up to be way safe. With a little info, the tuner has a better handle on things. Granted, a dyno or street tune is THE best way to go, but let Jesse try to make it right, before you lay out more money on tunes. BUT....the best way to go is to get EFI Live, or HP Tuners to really get everything set the way you want it. It takes TONS of time to get the driveability AND the WOT settings just right. And remember, every vehicle is different, just as every driver is different. If you talk to Jesse about your tune, He is also a dealer for EFI Live, so maybe he can make you a deal. Oh, and if you call him, call in the late evening. It may be easier to get in touch with him.
