They help in cutting out spark, so you can load the engine, inturn build boost, it is instant WOT.. They can be set you a certain rpm, so that the launch is on key every time.. I freaking love mine, have scared people off with it.. As for comparing them with a brake, the brake itself doesn't cut spark or make the engine sound like that.. It basically is a neutral drop once you let off the button, will engage the trans at whatever the converter is set for.. So with the 2 step/ brake/big converter, you get very good, consistent launches..

The brake will allow the engine to rev to red line if you do not have a 2 step to limit what rpm you want to leave at.. But once you let the button go for the brake it will only lock the converter at the lock up point it is stalled for.. Yes a trans brake is very hard on parts, you better have a bad *** trans to take the abuse..

Launching off the brake isnt so bad as a neutral drop. The brake locks the trans in 1st and reverse at the same time. Once you release the button, reverse is released, and the vehicle moves forward.
Launching off the brake isnt much harder on the trans than holding the service brake on and then flooring the gas. At least with the trans brake, the inability of the trucks service brake to keep the truck stationary on the line is taken out of the equation.
With the transbrake the u-joints/driveshaft and rear end are not loaded until reverse is released.
With the t-brake engaged, the rpms should come up to the TC's stall speed, if you are seeing red line with a TC that has a stall speed rating that is far below redline, you are driving through the TC. A TC upgrade is needed.
A neutral drop is going from neutral into 1st gear, really different IMO.
A neutral drop will killl a trans quickly, esp. a 700r4/4l60e/65e/70e.
A 2 step that cuts spark will eventually kill the cats as raw fuel is going into the exhaust. Cutting spark to different cylinders isnt particularily the best for a boosted engine, but when pushing the envelope you gotta do what you gotta do. A 2 step being used for launching still needs the service brake to hold the truck stationary at the line.
If you want the ultimate in control of launch so far as building boost at the line AND selecting which rpm you wish to launch at BOTH a transbrake AND a 2 step rev limiter should be employed.
2 step and t-brake wired together
Prestage, then Stage, engage 2 step and transbrake, go to WOT, when the light is right, release the transbrake button, which will also drop the 2 step, you will launch hard and with consistency every time.

sorry let me clarify, i meant the "foot' brake, like the controller would only allow the engine to rev to your set limit while the "footbrake" was being applied then once it senses the brake has been released it will rev. up (take off)
it would always be in gear just like a normal brake stand, but would control the rpm's so u wouldn't have to play with the pedal at the line???

It works better for a turbo app. Lingenfelter makes one that also allows you to change the timing, inturn build boost/load the engine more.. I bought mine more so for the bad *** sound, looks you get with them But it works very well also.
