Default Need help please - 1989 GMC 1500 wiper switch

I have a 89 GMC 1500 and the blinker/wiper arm and wiper switch needs to be replaced. Is there a "How To" on replacing these components? My friend pulled the steering wheel and after looking into it said the whole column needs to come out but I just dont believe that.

If you need anymore information please let me know. Thank you all.

I had to replace this on my 91 back in the day, let me check around and see if I still have some info on it laying around somewhere. I remember I had a good write up of instructions/how to on doing this for when I did mine but don't remember where I got it from as that was a long time ago now. Let me check and see and I'll post back on here later.

No problem, sorry I couldn't help you out. I tackled that job about 14 years ago now so I don't remember too many details at this point. Hahaha. I do remember it was a pain in the ***.

yeah from everything that Ive found since I posted this thread it looks like it would be easier to just replace the whole column with one from a junk yard lol.

TURN SIGNAL SWITCH REPLACEMENT

Remove or Disconnect

Tool Required:

J-23653-A Lock Plate Compressor
Steering wheel.
Instrument panel trim cover.
Position a screwdriver blade into the steering shaft lock plate cover slot. Pry up and out to free the cover from the lock plate.

Screw the center post of J-23653-A onto the steering shaft as far it will go. Compress the lock plate by turning the center post nut clockwise. Pry the retaining ring out of the shaft. Remove J-23653-A.
Important:

If the column is being disassembled on a bench, the shaft could slide out of the end of the mast jacket when the snap ring is removed.
Lock plate.
Turn signal lever screw and lever.
Hazard warning ****. Press the **** inward and then unscrew.
Turn signal mounting screws.
Pull the switch connector out of the bracket on the jacket and feed switch connector through column support bracket and pull switch straight up, guiding the wiring harness through the column housing and protector.

Wire protector. Pull downward out of the column with pliers using the tab provided.
Position the turn signal and shifter housing in the "low" position. Remove the harness cover by pulling toward the lower end of the column, be careful not to damage the wires (tilt column).

Turn signal switch. Pull the switch straight up, guiding the wiring harness and cover through the column housing.
Install or Connect

Tool Required:

J-23653-A Lock Plate Compressor
Important

Use only the specified screws, bolts and nuts at assembly. The use of overlength screws could prevent a portion of the assembly from compressing under impact.
On non-tilt columns, be sure the wiring harness is on the protector. Feed the connector and cover down through the housing and under the mounting bracket.
Turn signal mounting screws.
Clip the connector to the bracket on the jacket.
Instrument panel trim plate.
Hazard warning ****.
Turn signal lever and screws.
Put the turn signal switch in the "Neutral" position. Pull "out" on the hazard warning ****.
Washer, upper bearing preload spring and cancelling cam onto the upper end of the shaft.
Lock plate onto the end of the shaft.
Screw the center post of J-23653-A onto the steering shaft as far as it will go. Place a NEW retaining ring over the center post. Place the "C" bar over the center post and then compress the lock plate by turning the nut clockwise. Slide the new retaining ring down the tapered center post and into the shaft groove. Remove J-23653-A.
Cover on the lock plate and snap into position.
Steering wheel.

I have a 1989 GMC 1500 with a broken switch for wiper motor. It only works for intermittent wipes 3-4 at a time. I was going to add a toggle switch for normal use. Does anyone know where each of the 4 wires that go to the wiper motor go. I guessing black is ground, red positive, and the other 2, one is for intermittent, and the other is for normal operation. I don't have a lock plate compressor or I would replace the switch.

purple wire is the one that controls the motor, I put a rocker switch (30amp) on it now my wipers work. I'll probably change it to a rotary (rheostat) switch so I can control the speed.
