PYROMETER TEMPS How much is too high?
Drove new 408 turbo today, I had several gauges installed and one being a pyrometer.
Motor is still in tuning stages. I do not know what pyro temps are considered normal but while cruising under no load around 2400 – 2800 rpms, I was seeing approx. 1400 to 1475 degree temps. Sensor was mounted approx. 2 inches from head on No. 7 header.
Applying throttle into boost would decrease temps somewhat but when you return to a no load cruise, temps would immediately rise. Is this normal ? Outside temps today were around 50*
Any knowledgably info would be appreciated.

It's a bit hot, but I've seen hotter first hand. You may want to richen up your air fuel, more fuel = cooler exhaust...... Are you open loop or closed loop, are you tunning it or is some-one else?

That's a bit higher then mine runs. Typically, I see 1250-1350 when cruising down the highway, then I'm was towing my little enclosed trailer (weighs about 3k lbs) pulling it up hills, would clime to about 1450-1550 with 4-5 lbs of boost.
I just put the pyro probe on it and log with EFILive not too long ago. I thought it was pretty hot, but I've been running this turbos setup like this for a long time and haven't killed anything yet, . The guys I have talked to say I should be ok with up to 1600 for short periods of time before turbo damage would occur.

Cats start melting around 1700-1730 and stock pistons start melting around 1730+ so 1600 degree temps will run all day long as long as there is no detonation and the oil cooler will hang in there but this is done on a dyno with the EGT probes in the center of the cat cores so unless you have some good temp probes in the correct places I would try to run it a little cooler to be on the safe side 1450-1550 is a good place to be at wide open throttle. If I am tuning for power 1680 and stage 1 detonation is my favorite place to be but like I said this is done on a dyno with sophisticated equipment and held at wide open throttle for sometimes up to a hour at these temps so everything is very stabilized. short burst up to 1600 wont hurt anything as long as is does not detonate. BIG WORD, CAN NOT DETONATE or BOOM! Oh and don't try this at home. This is about the engine I would follow your turbo manufactures recommendations on heat as far as the turbo goes.
