Want better than just a code reader
#12
Not sure what your looking to spend but if your looking at using this in multiple cars you may want to consider something like a small hand held scanner. I had one of the first eqquis 3100 scanners and I wasn't overly inpressed. They have gotten better but after using a code scout 2500 from autoXray I think I would look into the autoXray 7000. It has live data streaming and its updateable for future changes. My fear with a laptop bassed setup is that draging around the equipment it may get damaged. Plus the Laptop itself cost more then the software your using although the software could be transfred if you had to replace the Laptop. I think a smaller handheld would be more cost affect overall esspecially if you had to replace it do to loss or damage.
Either way make sure you are getting your moneys worth out of what ever you decide to buy.
Post up what you decide to buy

Like the others have mentioned, you have several options; handheld, tune/scan or scan only software. The hand give you codes, require no computers, some can be downloaded to computers, etc. The top of the line is the Tech II professional scanners which have modules to do more than one make of cars, all the computers on the car including PCM, BCM, etc. The Scan only softweare run from generic SAE info to the advanced EASE professional software which has modules for each of the different computers your car has, much like the Tech II. The Scan/Tune software, EFILive and HPTuners, give you the ability to find your trouble codes, look at areas of performance that can be optimized and also the ability to change the tune using that information.
Like the others have said, the more knowledge you have about your engine, the more addictive it is to make it better, faster, or modified.

Ya, I'd like to know what route u go too. FastBrick mades a great point. U wanna get your use out of whatever u decide on. For almost 2 yrs, I just viewed & cleared DTCs. Even if some codes came back. That's just how it worked out.
A few months ago, I tuned for the speedo, something I woulda otherwise had to pay for or buy some unit. This week, I add my '05 efans & tune for that. I figure it's already paid for itself.
As I mod more & more, & then start hittin track, it'll get more use w/. tunes.

But Be pre paired to pay big time... they run in the neighborhood of $5000 New.... unless you shop around and find A deal.
You can get a nice used one between $1500-$2500 depending on how old it is. What shape it is in, what hardeware is included with it, and how old the software is. Alot of new cars run CANdi and the module is expensive to buy seprately. With out the CANdi module the scanner can not comunicate with the vehical. A new module is around $600-$700 and used one maybe $400ish
I believe CANdi stands for Controler Area Network Dierect Interface. its the latest version of software and operating system they are using on new cars.
I have the modual but I have never hooked it up to see what's different. I don't own any thing that new...

1FastBrick, do u mean Bosch? Ya, I can't see spendin $5k, let alone $1500-2500. HPT serves my needs. I coulda worded that a lil better. Most can't afford Tech II, let alone get ahold of 1. <--That woulda been a better way for me to word it before. But at least know I now.
