Default 6.8 SPC thoughts.

Was looking at a new Ruger M77 Compact, for a thick brush/toss behind the seat of a bush plane rifle. Going to put together my version of a scout rifle. But just noticed it came in the 6.8, which intrigued me because up here the 6.8 is still very oddball, and I like oddball.

Just looking for some real world hunting experience on it. Most of what I read on the gun forums about it was from guys preparing for the end of the world with AR's with the kitchen sink hanging off them. I don't have the patience for that ****.

Haha. I built an AR in 6.8spc 11 twist polygonal 3 groove match barrel 16". Shoots amazingly well. I deer hunt and hog hunt with it. 110 or 115 gr loads have very similar trajectory as a 168gr 308 load does out to 500yds.

Ammo isnt cheap for it but reloading helps a ton. Ive launched 85gr barnes At 3150fps amd 115gr SMK at 2625fps. Both are plenty accurate for critter blasting out to 400yds.
Taken deer out to 450yds with 110gr hornady bthp match loads.

Id build it again if i had too. Just make sure you get the spc 2 chamber and 11 twist.

First time i got to shoot a 6.8 was in a fellas Rem 700 20" heavy barrel when it was first released and he had already lengthened the throat with a reamer so it exceeded spc2 specifcations. Shot a perfect .75" group at 300yds. I was hooked from then on and found out Black Hole Weaponry sold poly 3 groove barrels so i had to try it.

I still gotta try my 140gr gameking loads. I keep forgetting, doh.

Found this over on 68forum

"Ruger has a compact Hawkey chambered in 6.8, but it too has the restrictive SAAMI chamber. The twist is better at 1:10 though. Using the SPC II chamber reamer on a 6.8 Hawkeye would make a pretty good light 6.8 bolt gun. "

I've got one of the early Remmy's with the 22'' fluted barrell. The trigger is set at around 3lbs and with Sierra matchkings over H322 I get .5'' groups at 100yds. The barrell heats up pretty quick is my only complaint

Thanks guys, after burning myself out reading about it, I think I'm set on the caliber. Not sure I'm up to spending that much on a rifle that is going to get the **** beaten out of it though. An AR platform is out of the question because of stupid Canadian laws, so leaning towards a custom Stevens 200.

Im actually looking for a barrel for my stevens. Its 223 now and gonna be takin yougens hunting this yea so i figured a semi varmint barrel 16" long fluted should be perfect you the kids.
Ill find the link. But theres a fella up north that sells the bolt heads to fit the 6.8 base.

If you do go that route just make sure you get the right twist and be really sure its spec2 chamber. Everything else is up to you. The round was designed for an AR with 16" barrel. So goin over 16" is mostly adding weight. Ill shoot you a PM when I get time.

I was hoping Shilen made a direct replacement barrel, but no dice.
