Default Got my Rem 700 SPS .308

Finally found one in town. Remington 700 SPS Tactical, .308, 20" Bull Barrel.
Going to have the receiver completely trued, bolt fluted, and jewel trigger put in. I will have this set up for 500-800yds, then up to 1000yds with some nice ammo. Going with the Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x50mm scope on Talley rings.

Any particular reason you chose a semi slow round for 1000yd shooting?

Should be a nice shooting rifle. If I may suggest though, forget about fluting the bolt. Sure, it looks cool. However, other than saving weight, I've never seen a fluted bolt make a difference. Try using that money to put a really nice stock or barrel on it. That's just what I'd do. If you're going to be buying ammo, try black hills, federal, or another match ammo especially for the 1k shots. Make certain you use 175gr or up. Unless something has changed, the 168gr rounds never really cut the mustard in 1k shooting. The 308 probably has more literature written on it for 1k shooting than any other caliber, so you're in good hands. Sure, there are faster/flatter rounds out there, but the sheer volume of data on the 308 will get you in the ball park. Happy shooting.

just incase you were wondering.... the old service guys called it the Mexican Match.
they never could get the 168gr loads to shoot worth a flilp at 1000yds.. so they pulled them and stuffed some 175gr bullets in.. vola started winning medals.

That rifle has a 10 twist barrel so your good there. Ive shot my 308 out to 800yds, thats about it. Ive won a couple gold medals at the 600yds Fclass with it to.

ill be loading my own rounds when i get out to over 800 yds. im going to try the 155gr Lapua Scenar and 175gr Sierra MK bullet and see how they both do at a 1000 yds. it will also depend on powder and primers. im just getting into the reloading realm! if im not happy with results, i have another reason to buy a rifle!!

Pretty sure your not gonn alike the 155gr stuff with a 20" 10twist.. if it was a 24-26" with a 12 twist you would prolly be in buisness!

Mine loves the 175 and 173gr SMK in Lapua brass with 45gr varget and BR2 primes. 2.850".

I have some old 1966 M118SB (FMJ) and 1972 M118 (HPBT) that both shoot sub moa at 600yds. I shot 20rds out of each ammo can and both shoot perfect.

I tried some 155gr stuff and i didnt have a fast enough powder for it. Just go ahead and go heavy

Grafs had some 178GR Hornady HPBT instock.

+1

You really have to push the 155's pretty hard in a 308 to ring out some serious distance. 175's and 178's are a proven round.

yea some the guys i use to shoot Fclass with did 308s with 30" barrels and 12 twist. they would sling them 155s.

Could shoot their 25rd string and barrel wouldnt even be hot. Guess you can do that when its 1.25" Dia haha..
After that season they would chop off enough of it to re ream the chamber and get a fresh throat to work with. could go 4 seasons before they would get another barrel.

Yeah I shoot the 155's out of my AR10 out to 600, anything further and it's the 175mk or the 178hpbt. The ol' 06 uses 190smk, and the bigger stuff gets fed either the 208 amax or the 215 Bergers.

I shot 168 bergers @ 2737fps out to 1000 yards @ 10mil in a sps varmint with a b/c stock bedded. It was not bad on a non wind day. I think a 175 would have been better but I like the challenge.
