Build a 1911
You already have a small pistol. Go with a real mans pistol now. You can get a Para GI Expert for roughly 450 and they are nice for the price. Not like your gonna shoot 50k rounds thru it so you dont have to worry bout wearing the frame out.
I traded a ruger LCR for a springfield GI 1911 that was made in 1991. Smooth as butter and shoots pretty good.

Personally, I'd go with the RIA. You can always mod it later if you'd like to. The thing to remember about them is that they're all business. No, their 1911's don't have the bells and whistles of a Kimber, but then again with Kimber's prices you could just get a Gold cup Colt and never need to touch it. The trigger on the RIA isn't half bad either. The Walther's make great side arms as well. I just don't have much of a taste for the 40 s&w (short and weak)

the xd feels too thick to cc comfortably. I know it'd make a big difference having a good holster for it, but I think something thinner like the PPS would be a better option for me. I'm also trying to consider how much I'll be using either option, and if I get the PPS for CCW, then I'll definitely be using it more.

I found an auto ordanance 1911 for $499 at the plano pawn shop on texas gun trader. Those are nice. So is the para. i have picked up a RIA, and it was ok, but not a para, hell even a taurus 1911 is a good gun, and not bad on price. I am not into plastic guns....1911 is my vote.
