Whats the point if you've akready got a 17hmr? The 22mag has marginally more powrr til 100yds then the 17 has more *** and at every distance especially the further you get out is more accurate. Ive got a 77/22mag old boat paddle stock in the safe, I havent shot it in close to 10 years. The 17hmr outperforms it in every aspect.

If your calling Coyotes, inside of 50 yards I'd use a 22 mag. I have shot two coyotes with my 17hmr and I just don't feel its big enough. Both went over a 1/2 mile and left very poor blood trails. Coon sized critters and under I feel real good about using my HMR.

Where did you shoot the coyotes? Ive head shot (right behind the ear) much larger four legged animals that dropped right in their tracks no problem. I'll only do that out to 100 though as thats as far as I feel confident I can stack a bullet in a quarter 100% of the time.

First was between the eyes at 30 yards, second I aimed at his nose (thinking it would be high in the heat of the moment) but it was a down hill shot and it got him in the neck dead center. his lung filled with blood and he finally went down but it was better then a half a mile. I try to head shoot when I'm using rimfires. I don't doubt it would take down a bigger animal with a perfect shot, but i won't admit to it online...
