Excuse my ignorance...what's wrong with the stock lower on the AR that warrants replacing? Also, recommendations on MFGs, or is an AR an AR regardless of who makes it?

The lower receiver is the part of an ar that has the serial number on it so it is technically the "firearm" and that will be the part outlawed if it happens. So if you've got the lowrr already as availabikity of parts to finish it off become available you can do it. Rather than paying the ridiculous prices people are charginf now.

An AR lower is an AR lower pretty much, just get an aluminum one. The polymers require some fitting occasionally. The billet lowers are basically just pretty but I sure like my pretty stuff

A billet lower is quite a bit stronger then say a forged DPMS, but its not really needed strength till you get into HD calibers like the WSSM or 45-50 cal type cartridges. Plastic lowers are cheap and they work. But if I was only gonna have one AR it wouldn't be a poly lower. I did finally break down and buy one, but it was for a light weight build I was playing with.

I got it under 6.2 lbs scoped, but with no mag.

This is my Billet Specialized Dynamics lower on my 6.5 Grendel, SWEET, but HEAVY!

I'd bet you'd have an easier time finding an M1A right now, unless your willing to get RAPED on an AR...

When has strength in a forged lower been a problem though? The lower doesnt recieve really any force during firing and there are guys on the 458socom forum using polymer and forged lowers quite often. Check out the posts by a guy named Big Bore. The 458 probably packs the heaviest punch of all ar15 cartridges and the only problrm they've really had was with the bolt lug on the feed ramp breaking off not with the strength of lowers. The billet lowers are just pretty and expensive pretty much, but I like em.

Its not normally a problem. I do know a few guys that hunt a very large number of hogs with heavy weight 50 Beowulf loads that have seen the upper/lower receiver pins start to egg out the holes in the receiver. But you are talking about lots of 350 g+ high recoil ammo being fired. The .358 wssm can be tough on them as well. But I doubt it would be a problem for the normal shooter. The billet lowers being machined from slightly harder grade of aluminum hold up a little longer.
