Default Marlin .444

Has anyone shot one, or own one? I am about to trade my step dad my .44 mag marlin for a .444 marlin. Should be fun blowing holes in hogs!!!

If you didnt know, the .444 marlin is the same bullet as a .44 mag, but the case is as long as a 30-06. Almost a 45-70 round.

I've shot one when I was a kid.. I remember the old man telling us a deer hunting story, how he shot a dear @ 100yards & blew it in half. True or false? It will spilt fire wood.

ha, you know I got the same story! But it was a doe at 100 yards and it fliped her, and threw her back 5 yards.

I've been hunting deer with my .444 for 20 years. It's my favorite bush gun. It's accurate and quick handling and the barrel sits below your head when slung, making it easy to walk through bush. Tracking deer is easy because of the large wound channel and messy bleedout. I haven't lost one yet. I use a Hornady 265FP but there are some nice pointed rubber- tipped bullets now. I highly recommend the .444 up to 200 yards.

Not that great for deer hunting if youve got to shoot any real distance but IMO there isnt a better bush gun. My dad has one and its a hog killing machine. Most of the bullet designs are a big, blunt FMJ design and they dont deflect in brush nearly as bad and theyll put a good pop on big hogs. I like it because its not a particularly fast round but it packs some ftlbs.

I am going to use it on hogs first, then deer later. I am looking for rounds, what do yall recommend? The 265 hornady looks like a good all around choice.

The 265 Hornady had a nice thick jacket and is built for the .444's velocity. It's also super accurate. I've used 240's and 300's with mixed results. Stick with one weight as they will all have greatly different points of impact if you mix them up.

I bought 40 rounds from midway to start with....they are $33 a box of 20, which beats $40 a box at any local store.

I've got one. The guys above have pretty much covered my personal opinion on the gun. It's not a fast round at all, but it's got a hell of a lot of knock down. If you're looking to hog hunt with it, you won't have any complaints.
